The Global Environment Centre (GEC) was established in 1998 and has been working on solving environmental issues of global importance for over 20 years, through strategic partnerships with like-minded organizations. It focuses on the areas of climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity, water resources, agriculture and forestry.
The organization is active in carrying out assessments on peatlands and climate change, sustainable agriculture, forestry and plantation management, reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation as well as forest conservation and rehabilitation.
Under GEC’s River Care Programme, 27 rivers have been rehabilitated. Its approach to the conservation of Malaysia’s mangroves have saved 130 hectares of degraded mangrove areas, and given a chance at life to over 300,000 mangrove trees.
Over the years, cumulatively, GEC has empowered more than 260 community groups and 700 education institutions to safeguard and restore natural resources.
In a conversation with Faizal Parish, Founder & Director of Global Environment Centre and the Environment Recipient for the 2022 Merdeka Awards, he shares the inspiration behind founding the organization, the partnerships that enable it to conserve and protect the environment and natural resources in Malaysia, including why everyone has a role to play in caring for our common home.
Additionally, Faizal spoke about:
- His background and the inspiration behind GEC
- The programs and initiatives that the center embarks on
- The receptiveness of corporations to support climate change initiatives
- How can the public get involved in GEC’s initiatives and programs
