With the outbreak of Covid-19, the Middle East gaming market is seen to be growing significantly due to increased use of online gaming services.
In the United Arab Emirates, the gaming business is booming, thanks to increased interest and investment in creating local talent and games. It is a fairly diversified region in terms of spending.
Dubai-based Galaxy Racer Esports (GXR), founded in 2019, is one of the fastest-growing esports organizations around the globe, it has 11 esports teams including League of Legends, Dota 2, CSGO, Fortnite, PUBG Mobile, and over 60 esports athletes from 22 countries and 20 content developers (SEA) across Middle East North Africa (MENA) and Southeast Asia (SEA).
The organisation claims to have over 160 million followers and 1 billion monthly views.
During our conversation with Allan Phang, the chief marketing officer of GXR, he talks about some of the key points and milestones in the development of the esports industry over the last decade.
Given an estimated 80 million gamers in the Middle East, Allan gives a perspective of the esports’ ecosystem there. He also talks about the esports landscape in Asia, who the major players are and the most popular sports and platforms.
In addition, Allan speaks of the Malaysian esports ecosystem, the size of the industry, who the key stakeholders are, and how it fits within the Asian ecosystem. He points out that the government is playing its part in promoting the industry, but however, in his opinion, he says more can be done.
Finally, Allan shares some of the challenges facing the industry now, and also where are the opportunities for growth.
