- China’s retail sales grew 2.5% in August from a year ago and came in well below the 7% growth forecast by analysts polled by Reuters.
- Industrial production growth was also slightly below expectations, up 5.3% in August versus predictions of 5.8% growth.
- Overnight the US Labor Department reported the Consumer Price Index in August posted its smallest gain in six months, suggesting inflation has probably peaked. This aligns with Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s long-held belief that high inflation is transitory.
