The Malaysian Society of Ophthalmology (MSO) is a professional organisation representing medical doctors specialising in the field of Ophthalmology in Malaysia.
Its President Dr. Manoharan Shunmugam gives an overview of MSO and what it does. He also shares his views on the level of awareness among the general public about ophthalmology and the related key diseases which are common in Malaysia.
Dr. Manoharan explains the main reason behind these eye diseases and the different types of eye diseases which can be minor or could lead to permanent loss of vision. He says there are many factors which include age, stress, infections, heredity, nutritional deficiencies, injuries or accidents, for example.
He further explains how to take good care of our eyes and what we need to do to ensure children have better vision and less medical eye-related issues.
On a different note, Dr. Manoharan talks about the gaps that have been exposed in the healthcare system during the pandemic. Furthermore, he gives his views on;
- how MSO’s members are adapting as medicine has evolved from an illness paradigm to a wellness paradigm.
- the key challenges facing the profession.
- how is medical inflation impacting ophthalmology as most Malaysians are not insured, underinsured or cannot afford the treatments.
