South Africa, the largest economy in Africa, has traditionally been focused in the primary sectors due to a wealth of mineral resources and favorable agricultural conditions, but now, the country is moving towards becoming a knowledge-based economy, with a greater focus on technology, ecommerce and financial and other services. Among the key sectors that contribute to the gross domestic product and keep the economic engine running are manufacturing, retail, financial services, communications, mining, agriculture, and tourism.
Since the establishment of full diplomatic relations on 8 November 1993, Malaysia and South Africa have enjoyed deep rooted relations and regard each other as close partners in the developing world. Malaysia views South Africa as a favorable developing market and in the last 25 years its exports to the country have increased at an annualized rate of 3.49%, from $292M in 1995 to $688M in 2021. Simultaneously, South Africa views Malaysia positively and its companies are still active in the Malaysian economy.
