The diplomatic relationship between Japan and Malaysia was established in 1957. Since then, bilateral relations have been strengthened through the implementation of the Look East Policy, economic relations, cultural and people-to-people exchanges.
Through the years, both countries have enjoyed a close economic and strategic partnership with Japan being the fourth largest trading partner of Malaysia since 2015, with trade values in 2021 amounting to USD35.9 billion, an approximate 20 percent increase from USD29.6 billion in 2020.
As this year marks the 65th anniversary of Malaysia-Japan diplomatic relations and the 40th anniversary of the Look East Policy, we spoke to His Excellency, Takahashi Katsuhiko to get his perspective on the relationship between the two nations and how this partnership can be further contribute towards overall progress for both nations.
