Career paths in the healthcare industry tend to be more restrictive than others; once you become a doctor, you will forever be one (at least that’s what most people think). Yet, nothing is ever cast in stone – as long as we have a change in perspective and have the determination to step out of our comfort zones.
According to Medscape Physician Nonclinical Careers Report 2021, approximately 20% of doctors have thought about quitting their current position to pursue nonclinical careers. The main reasons cited for doctors to consider leaving their medical jobs include burnout and a desire to spend fewer hours working.
A perfect example of a doctor who has made the switch is Dr Izzhar Putra bin Amirudin, the Head of New Business for Pathology Asia. Dr Izzhar has over ten years of experience in the healthcare industry and holds a MBBS medical degree from the University of London, as well as a Master’s Degree in emergency medicine. Having pursued a Degree in a niche medical field has made it harder for Dr Izzhar to pursue a new career path outside the medical field, yet, he did, brilliantly!
On our Jobs and Careers Show tonight, Dr Izzhar will share his experience on what it’s like to make a switch from medical practitioner to working in the corporate world. He’ll also touch on the transferable skills that doctors possess to help them transition and succeed in the corporate arena.
During the conversation, Dr Izzhar also speaks about:
- What made him shift from the medical world to the corporate world.
- The challenges he faced when he was seeking an alternative career.
- His new career path after leaving the clinical field.
- Does a Master of Business Administration degree (MBA) fill the skills gap that most doctors lack?
- Advice for people who are looking to enter the medical field.
