When Richard Joffe moved his family to Australia in 2019, he said applying for home insurance “was like traveling back in time 30 years.” He found the sign-up process painful, the fine print confusing, and the insurance company was reactive instead of proactive!
His painful experience was the impetus to start Honey, a smart home insurance company that is on a mission to eliminate the majority of avoidable accidents that happen in the home. The company’s clever strategy of giving customers $250 of technology upfront and ongoing services to keep homes safer when they sign up for house and contents insurance proved to be sweet spots that hit their customers right and a key reason for its exponential growth.
In an engaging conversation with #biztechasia, Rich, a seasoned entrepreneur who founded and exited two startups, spoke about Honey’s journey from inception to where it is today, including the pain points he wishes to solve in the home insurance industry. He shared Honey’s secret sauce for success and how it is disrupting the industry, particularly by rolling up tech upfront as well as key lessons from his entrepreneurship journey for the benefit of startup founders out there.
Additionally, Rich spoke about:
- How the company leverages technology to reduce the risks in its customers’ lives
- What’s next for Honey insurance in the next 1-2 years
- Advice for fellow entrepreneurs
