In countries with economic wealth, there is growing consumer awareness of, and interest in, alternative proteins. Meat has been the main source of protein in developed markets for years, and there has been an increased appetite for traditional protein in developing markets in recent years. However, changing consumer behavior and interest in alternative-protein sources due in part to health and environmental concerns as well as animal welfare have made way for growth in the alternative-proteins market.
According to market analysts, the global market for protein alternatives was estimated at USD2.8 billion in the year 2020, and is projected to reach a revised size of USD4.4 Billion by 2026, growing at a CAGR of 8 percent over the analysis period.
Already, products with alternative proteins, for example Beyond Meat and Impossible Burger, have been attracting consumers in a big way. Additionally, rise in interest among consumers for protein based diets is encouraging companies, including both animal and plant based protein ingredient companies, to develop advanced technologies for extracting protein alternatives and also seek new and more sustainable protein sources.
